Businesses across hospitality, leisure and entertainment have been given a major opportunity this summer following the Government’s announcement of a temporary VAT reduction from 20% to 5% on qualifying children’s meals, family admissions and selected attractions between 25 June 2026 and 1 September 2026.
While the changes are designed to help families during the school holidays, they also create significant commercial opportunities for restaurants, cafés, cinemas, tourist attractions, theatres and entertainment venues looking to attract more customers during one of the busiest trading periods of the year. At Mitchell Associates Chartered Accountants, we believe businesses that respond quickly and strategically could benefit from stronger customer engagement, increased bookings and improved visibility online during the summer season.
What Is Included in the Temporary 5% VAT Rate?
The reduced VAT rate applies to qualifying children’s meals, cinema tickets, theatre performances, exhibitions, museums, theme parks, zoos, family attraction admissions and selected child-friendly entertainment venues. HMRC has confirmed that these supplies must generally be specifically marketed towards children or families in order to qualify, while sporting activities and many takeaway supplies are excluded from the temporary relief. This means businesses should carefully review exactly which services qualify before changing pricing structures or promotional campaigns.
A Huge Opportunity for Hospitality and Leisure Businesses
For many businesses, the temporary VAT reduction could become more than simply a tax saving; it is also a powerful marketing opportunity. Consumers are actively searching online for affordable family days out, cheap summer activities, discounted meals, school holiday offers and family entertainment packages. Businesses that optimise their websites, offers and digital marketing around these searches may be able to generate significantly more website traffic and bookings throughout the summer holidays.
For example, restaurants may launch “Kids Eat for Less” promotions, cinemas may create family ticket bundles and attractions may market reduced-cost admission packages to drive higher footfall. Family-focused packages are especially important because HMRC guidance confirms that qualifying family admission tickets may benefit from the 5% VAT rate where they include at least one child.
Businesses Need to Prepare Quickly
Although the announcement has been welcomed by many sectors, implementation may be more complicated than businesses expect. Companies may need to update EPOS systems, amend accounting software, review VAT coding, change website pricing, update menus and booking platforms and prepare for the return to standard VAT rates after 1 September 2026. Businesses with bundled services, advance bookings or mixed supplies should be particularly cautious, as incorrect VAT treatment could create HMRC compliance risks later.
Timing will also be important, as tickets or admissions outside the qualifying period may not benefit from the reduced VAT treatment even if purchased during the summer window.
Should Businesses Pass the Saving Onto Customers?
Interestingly, businesses are not legally required to reduce customer prices. Some companies may choose to pass the savings directly onto customers, use the reduction to improve margins, fund advertising campaigns or create promotional family experiences. The best strategy depends on operating costs, competition, customer expectations and long-term growth plans. For some businesses, the biggest advantage may not be the VAT saving itself, but the additional exposure and customer engagement generated through summer promotions.
